When we first got married, my husband and I received a spice rack as a wedding gift. I was excited about this spice rack. It was shiny, it was new, it had a sleek spin feature. It held twenty stylish jars with labels that fit perfectly on the lids. I really had such high hopes. I would be an organized spice wife! What I didn’t realize was that being a spice organizer would come with pros and cons.
Before I knew it, that spice rack became a glaring thorn in my side – constantly reminding me of my failures. I was not filling the jars, I was not cooking as often as I thought I would (so many delicious restaurants close by!) AND I was annoyed by how much room it took up on our already limited countertop space. So much for being a successful spice organizer.
I lived in turmoil over this spice rack until I decided enough was enough. Off to donate it I went in the hopes that someone else could be victorious in organizing their spice life.
Now, almost 8 years later, I decided to try again. Not because I needed to. Throwing the spices in the drawer and digging around has been just fine! Well, fine-ish. That before picture is a little… rambunctious. I’ve weighed the pros and cons. Want to see what I’ve learned and whether I think it’s worth it to be a spice organizer?

What I’ve Learned About Being a Spice Organizer
I have learned that there is no “right” or “wrong” in organizing. It needs to be what is best for you in the season you’re in. In this current season, simplifying our spice drawer makes a lot of sense. We are doing the majority of our cooking at home and have the added bonus of a drawer to organize them in (out of sight out of mind!).
But the best part about it? I don’t need to be hard on myself when it inevitably gets messy again (I’m pretty sure the salt is already crooked beside the basil – see “cons” about husbands not respecting the alphabetical system). I can try to keep it neat and tidy, or I can choose not to. There is no self-worth tied to being a spice organizer anymore, my friends!
Here are some of my personal pros and cons to organizing the spice drawer! Like any organizing project, I believe it is personal preference. Do you think being a spice organizer is worth it? Check these out if you are looking for jars and labels for your own home!

Speaking of spices, have you tried these baked burrito bowls? I will say, having my spice clearly labelled saves me time (and sanity) while I’m cooking!
