Do you struggle with social media? You are not alone! This is my social media recap about living without social media one month at a time.
I have struggled with social media for years. Maybe you can relate? You get this overwhelming feeling that you need to put some distance between your life and hundreds of others.
At the beginning of this year, I felt heavy on my heart to lean into my conviction that social media is not a good fit for me and do something about it.
I decided to delete my social media accounts.
I’m documenting my journey with monthly recaps in the hopes that you might be able to find some encouragement along the way.
Whether you’re looking to delete your own accounts or put in place boundaries to help you better navigate being on social media…you are welcome here!
Step by step, I hope to discover for myself what it will look like to live a life social media free.
This post is about my monthly social media recap!
Social Media Recap
Month Two Recap – February
I decided to delete my social media accounts two months ago on January 1, 2023.
During my month one recap, I talked about how I was forced to face some issues in my personal life without the distraction of social media. It wasn’t easy.
I’ve realized how often I turn to my phone when I’m trying to avoid dealing with something. This is a habit I’m still trying to break. Even without social media, I find ways to waste incredible amounts of time scrolling on my phone.
what has challenged me
On one hand, I’m so glad that even with the amount of time I’m still on my phone, I’m not bombarded in the same way I once was. It feels quieter and more manageable without social media.
On the other hand, I feel like I still have a lot of work to do in regards to how much time I spend on my phone.
It’s convicting how often I pick up my phone instead of sitting with my thoughts. Or reaching for a good book (my favourite past-time!). I choose my phone over good-for-my-soul activities more often than I would like to admit.
Something I’m working on in 2023 is self-discipline. I’ve been looking deeper into areas of my life where I’ve allowed myself to slide about things I care about and start to take steps to getting to where I want to be.
I really care about living a more screen-free lifestyle. Not only for myself, but also for my kids. I want to be conscious of decreasing my phone screen time – for the benefit of my whole family.
WHAT I LOve about deleting social media
There are so many things I love about not having social media.
One of the main things is that I’m not constantly comparing my life to others the same way I once was.
Not seeing other people’s posts has helped me live more present with my family.
This is so big for me because there is so much I don’t want to miss in these young years with our kids!
I feel like I have come out of a claustrophobic room.
What surprised me this month
Something that surprised me this month was how I can still be easily influenced without social media.
This isn’t always a bad thing, I’ve come across some wonderful posts that have encouraged growth this month. That being said, this influence is something I want to be mindful of, especially when it comes to consumerism.
Part of self-discipline has meant being more mindful of our budget. I would say my spending is down without social media but that doesn’t mean the itch to buy isn’t still there! Especially when a tempting ad flashes in front of me!
My intention for next month
My intention heading into March is to continue to work on self-discipline when it comes to my phone and my spending.
I often catch myself trying to multitask but watching/listening to something on my phone while doing other activities. This has led to me feeling less productive and more overwhelmed. I want to be more intentional about doing one task at a time.
As for spending, I really want to make sure that every time I feel influenced to buy something, I remember my budget and do my best to stick to it!
