You have probably heard how many physical and emotional benefits there are to decluttering our homes. What are the spiritual benefits of decluttering?
Often times we fight battles with our stuff that isn’t just physical and emotional, it’s spiritual too. If you have ever tried to sit and read your bible in a room bursting at the seams with stuff, you know what I mean. It can become really hard to deepen your faith while faced with the distraction and overwhelm of the stuff in your home. There is nothing wrong with having stuff, it is what having too much stuff does to us that can pose problems.

Spiritual Benefits Of Decluttering
Here are my top 7 reasons why decluttering benefits your faith:
1. Simplicity
Living a more simple life benefits our spiritual health by helping us prioritize what truly matters. When stuff is not overtaking our home, we are able to focus on growing in our faith. There is something really special that happens in our homes when we simplify. Suddenly there seems to be more breathing room. We also tend to enjoy our homes in a new way.
2. Gratitude
When you look at the stuff you have, you realize how many blessings you have been given. There are so many times where our focus is on getting more stuff instead of being grateful for the stuff we already have. When we re-frame our minds to recognize how much we already have, it makes us appreciate what we have been given.
3. Contentment
It has been proven that stuff is not the path that leads to contentment. In fact, faith in Jesus is the only thing that can provide true contentment. Our stuff ends up being a barrier to what we truly need to feel long-lasting and unwavering peace in our homes.
4. Creating a sanctuary
I really believe that our homes are meant to be a sanctuary from the rest of the world. Too often, the things of the world creep into our spaces by the way of stuff. We are sold on the idea that our spaces will be more of a haven with the right type of stuff. Our culture tells us that more stuff is the answer to the problems of our homes. In reality, it is what keeps us spiritually cluttered. Styles and trends change.
5. Generosity
When I first started making decluttering an international habit, one of my favourite spiritual benefits that came out of it was how our stuff could become a blessing to someone else. It’s also where my love of thrifting started. The act of choosing generosity by giving away the materials you no longer need is so good for the soul. I love to support my local thrift store Mission Thrift. They are on mission to show Christ’s love through their organization. Check out more about their mission here.
6. Freedom
Materialism can feel like handcuffs. It can be hard to break free from a culture that is founded on consumerism. No matter where you look, someone is trying to sell you on a product that will improve your life. There is nothing wrong with getting products that make something better in your everyday life, it is when you start to believe that stuff will make you feel more free. The only way we are able to feel free is to not feel captive to anything – especially earthly materials.
7. Deeper trust
When we are able to acknowledge that we do not need excessive material possessions to find fulfilment, we are able to rely on God’s provision rather than on worldly wealth that is fleeting and fickle. We often buy stuff to help us feel more secure. When we find our security in Christ, we are able to deepen our trust.
