Looking for a way to maximize your small space without compromising your style? Check out these clever small space storage ideas!
When we first moved into our home, we knew we were going to need to be creative with our storage solutions. This became even more true when we welcomed our third baby. Suddenly there was a lot of stuff in a small space!
I tend to be more minimal by nature but when you have three little people 6 and under? It takes consistent effort to keep the stuff under control!
These are my favourite ways to store items around our home in a stylish (but functional) way!
This post is about small space storage ideas that will maximize your style!
Small Space Storage
I love when things look styled and put together. That being said, our home needs to work hard for us. We are a large family in a small space. Almost every corner of our house serves a purpose. I love the following creative small storage ideas that also look beautiful!
1. All-Purpose Hutch
The hutch we have in our open-concept living/dining/kitchen area serves many purposes. It is the bridge that brings all of the rooms together.
We have books stored there (including cookbooks!), decor items, tissues, spare change, flashlights, batteries and down below? Toys!
I love how this hutch works for our family in this current season. We need a central “hub” to put seemingly random items together. This helps us stay organized and makes cleaning up the main floor much easier at the end of the day.
Bonus? It is a statement piece! When I originally bought this hutch it was blue but I decided to paint it black to make a bigger impact. I absolutely love how this hutch meets a practical need while being visually beautiful at the same time!
Small Space Storage Shoe Cabinet
IKEA is known for their innovative storage ideas that you can make your own!
The dining room back door has always been a pain point. The kids are coming in and out often and I found that we needed additional storage to help keep the clutter under control. In addition, this tends to be a central hub for tech supplies (being right off the kitchen where we spend a lot of our time!).
I decided to put two shoe cabinets under the peninsula (attached with command strips). They are located right by the back door which is also close to the kitchen outlet that gathers most of our charging cords.
We use these shoe cabinets to store both tech and items that we don’t want sprawled over the dining room table or the floor.
They have come in so handy! I love that their sleek look also blends in really well against the peninsula.
Refinished Dresser in a Small Space
This is one of the first pieces I ever refinished and I love it so much. It has served as an amazing small space storage solution!
We have this refinished dresser in our small bedroom. We needed something that allowed us to store overflow items that didn’t fit well in our closet or bedside tables.
You would never know that I store socks, books and linens in here! And there’s room to spare (which is great for hiding gifts if I may say so myself!).
I love how this dresser acts as backup storage for us and can be used for anything “extra” that doesn’t have another spot to hang out.
Small Space Reading Corner
I recently wrote about adding a reading corner into the playroom.
We have a lot of books (just the way I like it!) but we needed a better small space storage solution.
This reading corner serves two main practical purposes: it stores books and it also makes them accessible to the kids. They are easily able to climb up to grab what they want to read and then return it to the shelf when they are all done.
I love this as a small space storage solution because it looks great while maximizing the function of our small space.
What do they say when you need more room in a small space? Use the wall as VERTICAL storage!
Piano Storage Bench
One of my favourite places to store paper clutter is in the piano bench!
With so much music available online, we don’t need to use the piano bench to store music (at this point!).
Instead, I use the piano bench to store papers I need to sort through. It might sound crazy – but it works for us!
I don’t like keeping paper in a pile on the countertop or on the dining room table, so I need a spot that’s close by that keeps the papers together until I’m ready to sort.
This comes in handy on the days where I don’t have time to deal with the paperwork right away. It’s also great because the kids don’t think of going in there. Win win!
